Therapy is a process of getting un-stuck. Whether you’re constrained by problems at work, in the family, or from places unknown, I will collaboratively work with you to find a path forward towards your goals.  With a spirit of genuine curiosity and respect, I work with individuals, couples, families, and children to summon their resources and negotiate the obstacles to growth. By being authentic and nonjudgmental, I will meet you where you’re at and support you in achieving the practical goals you set. Or we will develop them together if you don’t quite know how therapy will work for you. Utilizing empirically supported tools adapted to your unique needs, we will transparently track the success of therapy  to make sure you’re seeing the changes you desire, often first seen in the first few sessions.

Prior to securing my MA in Counseling Psychology from the Wright Institute and registering as a Marriage Family Therapist Intern (IMF 69036), I worked for 15 years helping communities and individuals create the change they seek through facilitating leadership development, philanthropy, and movement building. I have been profoundly impacted by the stories of the people I’ve worked with in this capacity, from the young Indigenous activist from the Russian Far East to the Bay Area family trying to right the world’s wrongs through  grant-making. Within the role of an individual, couple, and family therapist, I utilize the same commitment to understanding individuals’ unique stories and finding solutions grounded in individuals’ own experience and resources. My clinical training has included practice in narrative, solution-focused, multicultural, and  family systems therapies. Additionally, I use techniques from CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and emotion focused therapy.

Although I approach each family and individual with the same level of curiosity and hope, I have developed particular interests in the following issues: school-based problems, including ADHD, bullying, self-esteem, and classroom behavior; trauma recovery; communication and behavioral challenges in the family; grief following the loss of loved ones and coping with illness; depression, anxiety, sadness, and stress; relationship problems; and issues related to identity and life changes, including career shifts, family milestones, immigration, biculturalism, transracial adoptions, gender roles, and coming out. To schedule an appointment in San Francisco or Berkeley, I can be reached at 888-637-7404 ext. 31 or robert@oakcreekcenter.org. I look forward to getting to know you.
